Carmel Hearn and the cast of Asbury Memorial Theatre’s Steel Magnolias

Carmel Garvin Hearn has directed and appeared in professional and community theatre productions in her hometown of Savannah, Ga., as well as in the Atlanta area.

She directed Robert Harling’s “Steel Magnoliasin 2017 at Asbury Memorial Theatre in Savannah. Of that production, Bill Dawers of the Savannah Morning News said, “Hearn and the strong ensemble cast make numerous choices that bring the characters to life. I’m sure I’m not the only audience member who could relate deeply to the hardest moments in ‘Steel Magnolias’.”

Carmel first appeared onstage in 1975 in Savannah Little Theatre’s Experimental Theatre production of “Godspell,” directed by Chris Fredeman. More recently, she was cast in the dual roles of Maxine’s Mother and the Infamous “Woman at the Party” in Savannah Community Theatre’s production of “Johnny Mercer and Me,” presented in 2016 at the historic Lucas Theatre in Savannah. She was cast as Margaret in SCT’s 2014 production of “The Savannah Disputation,” at the Muse Arts Center in Savannah; and as the Charwoman in the 2006 production of “A Christmas Carol,” presented at the Towne Lake Arts Center in Woodstock, Ga. Other memorable roles have included Maggie in Savannah LT’s “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” Mona in Hunter AAF’s production of “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” and Nancy Twinkle in Armstrong State College’s production of “Little Mary Sunshine.” 

Carmel served as lead scriptwriter for the live production, “Carols for Christmas: Christmastime,” presented in 2018 at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church in Marietta, Ga. She developed a show for elementary students, “Who Wants to Be the Most Important Georgian?” which toured in Savannah and Athens, Ga. in recent years, and also wrote the Christmas drama, “Treasures of the Heart,” which she directed in 2014 in the Atlanta area. Several of her works have been published by Drama Ministry Magazine.

After earning a BA in English, concentration in speech and drama, from Armstrong State College (now Georgia Southern University – Armstrong Campus), Carmel’s career has taken her from being a news and weather anchor at WSAV TV in Savannah to serving as the City of Savannah’s original Cable Access Coordinator, then to Atlanta, where she wrote live content for the Weather Channel and for the Emmy-nominated “Jim Fowler’s Life in the Wild” television series, and where she continues to work in marketing, public relations and the film industry.
